Pain Sucks, Part 1 of 7: Pain Management in 6 Steps

Pain sucks. I’m not talking about the type of pain associated with the occasional toe stub, shin knock or even accidentally whacking your thumb with a hammer (which I’ve done with inexplicable precision). Okay, the latter does hurt like hell.

I’m talking about constant, nagging pain that has you in an unrelenting chokehold.

Nearly one in five Canadians experience pain daily. According to a survey of 4,000 Canadians conducted from 2007 to 2008 by Nanos Research, over 18% of adults suffer from chronic pain.

I’m a member of this growing statistic. As someone who lives with daily pain, I know all too well that pain can have a life-altering impact on all levels; physical, mental, spiritual and financial. I have my good days and my not so good days in terms of the intensity and frequency of my flare-ups. I’m happy to say that I experience more good days than not when I faithfully follow these 6 daily activities:

1. Regular exercise

2. Quality sleep

3. Good nutrition

4. Mindful meditation

5. Laughter

6. Creative expression

Stay tuned for more information on how I practice pain-management with each of these activities.
